The corporation confirmed its intent to purchase Mojang for $2.5 billion USD in September following initial reports earlier that month. Microsoft expects to break even on its multi-billion dollar Mojang acquisition by the end of June 2015, according to an investor relations release from September.
"Gaming is a top activity spanning devices, from PCs and consoles to tablets and mobile, with billions of hours spent each year," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at the time. "Minecraft is more than a great game franchise - it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft."
Founders Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, Carl Manneh and Jakob Porser are leaving the company following the deal. Persson revealed after the acquisition announcement that his reasons for selling Mojang to Microsoft was "not about the money. It's about my sanity."
